The result of these Applied Scholastics workshops was that virtually all of the teachers in the country — 5,529 to be exact — came to Gambia College to participate. Some 98% of The Gambia’s schools then integrated study technology into their teaching programs.
The next phase of the program started in 2002 when 18 Gambian educators received more advanced training. These were Regional Trainers who were put through an extensive Applied Scholastics teacher trainer course. They also completed an apprenticeship to gain certainty they could get the desired results when teaching other educators how to fully use study technology.
As one of these teachers said, “Today is the day that I really call myself a teacher. I was in the dark and you have brought me to light and this light will shine on me forever.”
The importance of this program was recognized around the country, particularly after the Secretary of State for Education attended the closing ceremony of the Applied Scholastics program—an event covered on national television.
